Home for the Weekend – Volunteer FAQ

Home for the Weekend: Frequently Asked Questions

The Home for the Weekend program is a rewarding way to support ECAD’s mission by opening your home to a Service Dog in Training. Over weekends and holidays, you’ll help the dog practice manners, obedience, and confidence in a real-world setting—bridging the gap between our training center and a future client’s home.

What is the "Home for the Weekend" program?

The Home for the Weekend program lets volunteers host a Service Dog in Training in their home over weekends and holidays. You’ll help reinforce obedience skills, manners, and confidence in a real-life setting—bridging the training center and a future client’s home.

How long is the commitment, and what does it typically involve?

Volunteers commit to a 6-month period, hosting a dog typically once every weekend or on holidays. The dog usually stays for a few days—enough to practice skills and acclimate to home life.

Do I need training before becoming a Home for the Weekend volunteer?

Yes. Home Handlers attend a two-day training course at ECAD’s education center. Here, you'll learn how to continue training commands, reinforce manners, walk safely, and help the dog behave in home environments.

What guidelines should I follow while hosting a Service Dog?

Home Handlers maintain the dog’s training mindset—no jumping on furniture, no begging, and safe handling protocols tailored to protect the dog's behavior and health, especially in households with medications or pets.

How do I apply to become a Home for the Weekend volunteer?

To get started, fill out the online volunteer application and select the Home for the Weekend program. A Volunteer Coordinator will follow up to discuss next steps and training.
