Junior Canine Care: Frequently Asked Questions

The Junior Canine Care program is a hands-on opportunity for youth ages 12–17 to work alongside ECAD’s canine care team at our Winchester, CT campus. From cleaning and grooming to exercising future Service Dogs, this program gives young volunteers the chance to build skills, gain experience, and make a real difference in the lives of our dogs.

What is the ECAD Youth Volunteer Program?

It’s a learn-to-work opportunity for youth ages 12–17 where you assist our canine care team at the Winchester, CT campus. You’ll help with essential tasks like cleaning kennels and crates, grooming and exercising future Service Dogs, and ensuring their well-being and comfort.

When and how often do youth volunteers work?

Shifts are offered on Saturdays and Sundays, typically in 3-hour blocks (9 AM–12 PM or 1 PM–4 PM), as well as after school and during school breaks.

What are the eligibility requirements for youth volunteers?

Volunteers must be between 12 and 17 years old, have reliable transportation to our campus, be able to follow directions with limited supervision, and commit to at least six months of involvement.

What is the application process like?

First, complete the online volunteer application. Then you'll go through a phone interview, and upon acceptance, attend an orientation session to prepare you for your shifts and help you succeed.

Can Junior Canine Care volunteer hours qualify for school service or supervised agricultural experience requirements?

Yes. This program is perfect for students needing Service Learning (SSL) and Agricultural Experience (SAE) hours or similar school requirements. It’s a meaningful way to make an impact—and meet your volunteering goals at the same time.
